This are the two videos that Isa, one of our classmates, recorded. The first one is only about 3 minutes long and the second one is 18 minutes long. Although they are two separated videos, the second one follows the first one.

Design Process 5

Making this proyect possible was a bit difficult for us, because each of us had different ideas, but finally we reached the better solutions and we were able to decide which ideas will be the most appropiate for our coffe shop.
At the beginning we thought of improving our canteen by incorporating vending machines or maybe coffee and hot chocolate makers, kettle teapots or juice squeez. But this didn´t convince us, so we decided that the best place in the school to put the coffe shop was the “Tilo´s Garden”, known by students as “Cuadrado”. Another idea that didn´t come true was to keep the Tilo. Because there isn´t much space in this place, we thought that it would be better to take it off, but we solved this problem when we realised that it would be nice that there is a smaller tree in the outdoors with some plants.
But we also had some challenges that succeded, such as the outside terrace, the second floor or the recycled materials that should be used to build the coffe shop.
Listening to our classmates we realised that we should have thought about some other issues before, like the used that the parents will give to it, the students account or the people that will work there.

Introduction

We are Clara Heredia, Pablo Heredia, Guillermo Domínguez and Almudena Miláns del Bosch and we have gone through a project about designing a coffee shop in our school.
It was a few weeks before Christmas when our english teacher encouraged us to do a project like this, and we instantly started coming with ideas and plans, we were very enthusiastic. Our aims were to design a place that everyone in the school could use to have a chat, play cards, have a bite and unwind without being cold (during winter) or hot (during summer).
We knew from the first moment we wanted to design a coffee shop, so the first thing we did was to go outside and search for the best space where it could fit. We came to the conclusion that the Tilo’s garden was the ideal place, as it’s not very used, and it connects with the secretary’s room, the toilets and the eating room. We took measures and we started making drafts, trying some ideas and rejecting others, until we came with the final design, and also with basic statements of how would it work.
We presented our project in our school, and everyone had a good reaction on it. They told us a few things we had to consider, so we worked on them to improve the project.
When we finished it, we felt satisfied, as it covered our expectations. It also has been a gratifying experience, and we hope everyone will enjoy and like it.

Design Process 4

We presented the whole project in class in order to see what our classmates thought about it. Pablo started the presentation making a brief summary of how our Coffee Shop is going to be and describing its main objectives and advantages, Guille and Almu talked about the prototype designs, construction of the building and distribution of the space inside it, and Clara explained everything concerning employees, prices and children accounts, and gave a little talk about what were our roles when developing the project.
After all of this, we asked our classmates if there were any questions, and they were really participative. They proposed a lot of new ideas that we wrote down, took into consideration and decided to put into practice.
Our whole presentation was recorded by Isa, one of the students, and you can find it in Design Results 4.

Design Brief 4

Presenting our project to our classmates and listening to their opinions and contributions made us think of a few things we hadn’t taken into consideration.
First of all, we realised that this Coffee Shop would be perfect not only for students but also for parents. A lot of them stay after school chatting with teachers or with other parents while their children play, and we are sure they would enjoy a comfortable place like this one.
Besides, it would also be used during special events such as “Calle Peatonal” or “April Fool’s Day”.
Another point that we discussed was creating “Coffee Shop Accounts” for students, as we figure parents may not want their children to bring any money to school (as they could lose it, or someone could steal it from them). These accounts work pretty well in other schools. Each student would have one, and they would be filled by parents with as much money as they want their kids to spend. The school would assign a number to each account, and each student would have to memorise it to be able to order. This method would prevent children from handling money and would also speed up the queues.
Our classmates asked us about what type of food would be on sale. We would like it to be kind of healthy and varied. It could include juice, fruit, sandwiches and salads, and not many snacks or cans of soda.
Another point we talked about was service. We think that two people to take care of clients would be enough and the only problem with this is that the school would have to hire them. Anyway, taking into consideration that this Coffee Shop would be a source of income for the school, the expenses wouldn’t be as high.
Finally, some of our classmates suggested that bachillerato students should have preferences (as our recess are shorter) and should be able to jump the queues if they are too long. Everyone seemed to agree, so it’s something that the school could bare in mind.

We don’t need to make any changes to our prototype design, as everyone agreed on the location and disposition of the coffee shop. Some people suggested it’s a little bit small, but there’s nothing we can do, as our school is not too big.
There is a video that one of our classmates recorded while we were presenting our project, you can find in Design Results 4. It shows us explaining the main aspects of the design and our classmates asking questions and suggesting new ideas.

Design Process 3

In this part of our proyect we used an application called “My Four Walls” so we were able to design how we wanted to be our coffe shop.

During the desiging we realized that the tree that was in the middle of the “Tilo´s garden” was impossible to keep in our proyect. So we came up with a new idea: we thought that there should be another tree, smaller than the previous one, in the outdoor space.

Then we decided where to put each of the things which are supposed to be indoors, such as ther bar table, the wall unit where all the food is going to be or the storage where the coffe machine or the orange juice machine are going to be.
We also decided that the stairs should be spiral stairs, so the coffee shop will have a retro touch.
At the outdoors, we thought that there should be some plants next to the tables.
And we also thought of putting some paintings in the wall of the second floor, even students could be the ones that paint these paintings.
